December 10 Meeting

Dr. Jim Snyder

Our December speaker will be Dr. Jim Snyder, the Director of the NW Education Cluster and will be discussing the emerging market in Oregon of Traded-Sector Education. Dr. Jim Snyder spent the last 16 years in the education field as a marketer and researcher working with educators around the world. He has presented at conferences throughout the world (EARCOS, CEESA, NESA, WAFLT, ACTFL, Fusion, and AAIE, Quality Matters) speaking on how growth measures, longitudinal data, assessments and online course design can support educators. Also Metro will be on hand to provide a brief update on the Powell-Division Transit Project. The presentation will focus on the transit line routing and outreach conducted to date in the City of Gresham.

January Meeting

Drew Mahalic, CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority will be our featured speaker for our first meeting in 2016. He will be speaking on Sports and Economics and how we can use sports to help in our economic development efforts. Drew Mahalic is in his 20th year as CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority. The organization has helped to bring more than 200 events to Oregon with an economic impact exceeding $250 million. Notable events include NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments, Davis Cup World Final, US Figure Skating Championships, and Women’s World Cups. Drew is the only National Football League veteran with a degree from Harvard Law School. He played linebacker in NFL with the Eagles and Chargers for 5 years and on Notre Dame’s 1973 National Championship team.

Oregon Business Plan Summit

Monday, December 14th at the Oregon Convention Center is the Oregon Business Plan Leadership Summit. EMEA Executive Director Jarvez Hall will be among the attendees and there is still time for you to register if you are interested. The Summit is one of Oregon’s premiere economic policy event, where leaders from across Oregon’s public and private sector gather to shape the agenda for the year ahead with the aim of creating jobs, raising incomes, and reducing poverty.  Click to see the agenda for the summit and to register.

Legislative Breakfast

We are close to being able to announce our Inaugural Legislative Breakfast that will be held each January prior to legislative sessions. We are extending invitations to all of the East Metro State Representatives and Senators to give you an opportunity to interact with them and provide them with information prior to the legislative session. Sen. Laurie Monnes-Anderson and Rep. Mark Johnson have already confirmed. Look for an official announcement in the coming week.

Reynolds School District Hearing
Reynolds School District Board, acting in the capacity as the District’s Local Contract Review Board, will conduct a Public Hearing on Wednesday December 9th, 2015 beginning at 7:00 pm PST to hear and take testimony on a proposal for the School District to bypass the competitive bid process requirements for Reynolds School District Capital Bond projects including the replacement of three elementary schools, Reynolds High School Additions and Remodel and District Wide Secure Vestibule upgrades. The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm in the Fairview City Hall Board Room located at 1300 NE Village St, Fairview, OR 97024. Please attend and get your questions answered and share your concerns.

Urban Growth Boundary
Last month, on November 12th, the Metro Council voted unanimously to maintain the current Urban Growth Boundary for the region. The Urban Growth Boundary will not be reviewed again by Metro for another 3 years. EMEA will be a part of the discussion of Urban Grown Boundary and will be keeping you informed every step of the way. See the letter EMEA sent to Metro Council President Tom Hughes and the Metro Council in response to the initial recommendation of Metro COO Martha Bennett to not expand the urban Growth Boundary. EMEA will always advocate for economic development and the ability for the East Metro region to grow and prosper.
